In the mid-1950s, Solon, Ohio, experienced a significant boom in population and industry. At the time, the nearest Masonic gathering place was Golden Gate Lodge No. 245 in Chagrin Falls. While many Solon locals were members there, a large number of newcomers moving to the growing city held memberships in lodges that were a considerable distance away.
In 1955, Lucius E. Taylor, a Solon resident and District Deputy Grand Master, recognized the need for a local lodge. After securing the approval of Grand Master Ed. W. Kuns, a list of local Masons was compiled. However, the movement needed a "spark plug" to truly get going. That spark arrived in the form of Worshipful Brother Howard W. Hurless, a Past Master who had recently relocated to Solon.
On October 4, 1956, a notice was sent out, and local Masons gathered at the Solon Community Church to officially discuss establishing a new lodge.
The momentum built quickly. On February 20, 1957, a formal petition signed by 65 brothers—representing 36 different lodges—was submitted to the Grand Lodge.
On March 6, 1957, a massive meeting was held at Golden Gate Lodge No. 245, our sponsoring lodge. With 324 members representing 65 lodges in attendance, the dispensation was presented to the newly formed "Solon Lodge U.D." The very next night, the lodge went into active operation, holding its first meetings in the Solon Road Elementary School gymnasium. Thirteen candidates were raised under this dispensation before Solon Lodge proudly received its formal Charter on October 30, 1957, from Grand Master Andrew J. White.
Decades later, the spark that started our charter burns brighter than ever. Today, we are a lively, active lodge built on a proud, blue-collar attitude—a brotherhood so distinct and tight-knit that our members have recently started calling it simply, The Solon Lodge.
We believe in rolling up our sleeves, doing the hard work, taking care of our community, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our brothers. While we deeply honor the history of the men who founded us in the 1950s, our focus is on the present and the future. We remain fiercely dedicated to the timeless tenets of Masonry: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.
Whether we are conferring degrees, sharing a meal, or organizing a community project, The Solon Lodge is a place where good men come together to make themselves, and their community, better.
